Good grief, no wonder this Yank has been confused by what is an English county and what is not for literally decades.....The overlapping per county administration type, the subdivisions, I thought the confusion in bureaucracy that I saw demonstrated on TV by shows like "Yes, Minister" or on radio by "The Men from the Ministry" was exaggerated. Perhaps not.

In the US, what counties really do also depends on where you are. In many states, they're a powerful division of government. In most of New England, where your whole state is entirely divided into cities and towns, they're nearly nonexistent--they're mostly administrative divisions of the state court and prison systems, the county sheriff is basically the chief jailer, and there may be no county government at all.

Nice one chaps. It's interesting that County Recorders who record England's flora, fauna and fungi, still use the pre-1974 County maps. Logical really, otherwise comparisons over time which aim to see how well or badly certain species are faring would be hard to understand. Let's face it a Great Crested Newt doesn't give a shit if it lives in Huntingdonshire or Cambridgeshire, because it's just something humans have made up.
A bit of disappointment that you didn't explain the Soke of Peterborough, although it appeared on your map. Peterborough was originally a Soke, but in its history has been part of Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire and now a Unitary Authority. Five incarnations so far, a bit time-lordish. There were other Sokes, now there's a thought...
    Also enclosure maps.. another thought...
Really like your style in these shows. Love and peace.
